Sea stories are the best, but they're even better when they're told in the spaces where they happened. Check out this replay of our latest live feed, where CIO David Canfield took us on a fun, memory-filled journey through another rarely-seen area of Battleship IOWA: the Forward Auxiliary Machinery Room.
Link in our Behind The Scenes highlight.
From CIO David Canfield:
"Los Angeles county regulations still prohibit us from having any 'events' on the ship although we ARE open to the public. As such the memorial will, once again, be virtual this year livestreaming simultaneously on Facebook and YouTube.
"There are some people who will be coming and all will be welcome to participate in the ceremony by reading names, ringing the bell and/or sharing some memories.
"It is tough to have to be virtual again this year, but stay strong shipmates. We will always honor and remember our 47."
Get ready! Weβre going live on our YouTube channel (Battleship USS IOWA Museum) from deep inside the ship again this Saturday!
Mark your calendar: April 3 at 3 PM PST. Come hang out with CIO David Canfield in another of the spaces where he worked as a young sailor and hear entertaining stories of life on the battleship. π
Weβll be in the compartment pictured above. What is it? Tune in and find out!

We had glorious weather in LA Harbor yesterday. Looks to be equally fantastic today. Come enjoy it by touring Battleship IOWA! We're fully open and ready to share our marvel of engineering and history with you.
While you're in the area, grab a meal at one of San Pedro's wonderful restaurants. Most are open for outdoor and distanced indoor dining. Support two local businesses and make a day of it!
Our 2021 HULL PRESERVATION campaign kicks off today. We need to raise $200,000 by May 26th. Swipe up on this graphic in our Announcements highlight for details. π
Last Saturday, Battleship IOWAβs grey radio group broadcast using one of her teletype machines. It hadnβt operated since 1990. Theyβre understandably stoked about it.
Not sure what a teletype is? Swipe up on this photo in our Behind the Scenes highlight and IOWA volunteer and amateur radio enthusiast Gary Lopes will explain it and some of the other gear in our message center.

Weβre closed today, but when we reopen tomorrow (with COVID protocols in place), all sorts of cool interior spaces - like the 03 bridge - will have open doors. Come see!
Tonight at 6:00pm Pacific Time, join the Surface Navy Association and the Navy League for a discussion with our Chairman of the Board - Rear Admiral Mike Shatynski, USN, Ret. - on these exciting topics:
1. Why am I inspired to open a National Surface Navy Museum on October 13, 2025?
2. A discussion on the birth of the Surface Navy, its mission to ensure freedom of the seas, and the indomitable spirit of America's Surface Navy sailors embodied in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
3. Mark your calendars to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of America's Surface Navy with me at the National Museum of the Surface Navy at the Battleship IOWA.

Just another gorgeous day on Battleship IOWA. Have we mentioned weβre open for #outdoortours ? π
That live feed we did from Aft AMR...? Want to know how we made it happen? Stay tuned for a video all about it. In the meantime, here's a little tease and a taste of what that bright yellow i-beam on Broadway is there for.
